Symbolism, Characterization and Imagery
This week: read Great Gatsby chapters 1-3
1.
Identify as many symbols as you can WITHOUT looking it up on spark notes. Explain why that object could be a symbol and make a guess as to what it might symbolize.
2.List all the main characters and analyze how they are described when first introduced, through the eyes of nick. What literary devices are used to describe them and what does that make you feel about the character? Main characters are: Nick, Gatsby, Tom, Daisy, jordan and Myrtle. Use the thesis statement template to generate your response to each character.
Bonus: this story uses IMAGERY a lot, which means it really lends itself to art. Draw a picture of a scene from the book, bringing the imagery to life with your drawing.
